So far this year I’ve been to over six cities in Europe and spent a decent chunk of time in each of them.
The easiest “evaluation” of a city and it’s “hustle” is now done simply by observing some taxi drivers.
The Taxi Test is very simple: when you are in a main area packed with people, what are the taxi drivers doing?
1.) Hustling and trying to get people into their cabs–negotiating, bargaining, etc.
2.) Are they all just sitting around and smoking cigarettes, even refusing to drive unless you accept their higher-priced foreigner fare.
So far the cities that I’ve seen that fall into category 1 are: Kraków, Kiev, Warsaw, and Venice.
The cities that fall into number two are: Odessa, and Istanbul.
Now, Warsaw, Venice, and Istanbul were all shorter trips where I didn’t really “live” there. More just passing through.
However, let’s use the other three as comparison: Kraków, Kiev, and Odessa.
Do you think I got more work done in a town with hustle and bustle (Kraków, Kiev), or in Odessa?
In Odessa, taxi drivers were a joke. I tried to get one off the street one night so I could go meet my girl at the airport. He wanted 200 UAH (about $8). I offered him 150 UAH and he told me to fuck off.
A typical fare to the airport if you call a dispatch company was 62 UAH. I had my Russian-speaking pal call a cab for me.
See what I mean?
Here a guy was, about to make more than double the going rate for a ride, and he didn’t want to do it. He preferred to sit on the sidewalk at 11pm at night and smoke a cigarette.
Which is fine and dandy at all, but it’s not how you get ahead in life. It’s not how you WIN. It’s how you stay a damn taxi driver working at 11pm at night.
His attitude is that of a loser.
But hell, we all have our times that we struggle with motivation.
Here’s three tips from the desk of Trouble to help you break out of a motivational funk.
One of the biggest mistakes I made was staying in a place I wasn’t happy for too long. Your environment is a reflection of who you are.
Not happy with the career options in your town? Get the hell out of there. Worried you might upset your friends/family that you leave?
Nobody got rich by being unselfish.
No man ever ends up happy because he’s unselfish. They’re usually the suckers buying girls dinner while I fuck them.
Again, Odessa made me a lazy son-of-a-bitch. I hated that place. As soon as I was back in Kyiv my motivation skyrocketed.
If you are unhappy, move. If you live somewhere that doesn’t encourage hustle, move.
Make no apologies for doing so.
Modafinil and Adrafinil are two extremely powerful supplements that WILL make a different in your productivity.
For a while, I was scared to use either one of them.
Foolish of me.
How many professional athletes get popped every year for some sort of performance enhancing drugs? In those cases, it’s against the rules.
Guess what–there are no rules in the game of life. Adrafinil and Modafinil are 100% legal options.
I only wish I’d started sooner.
I’ve written before on the importance of mentors.
Having someone to help hold you accountable, who you would be “ashamed” to let down can really do wonders.
My first job out of college was basically hand-given to me by my best friend and mentor of 7+ years.
And I kicked ass at that job. Because I didn’t want to let him down. Nothing would have been more shameful.
My second job I had a mentor who lived in the second office on the East Coast. When he was out on the West Coast, or me on the East, I worked hard. I wanted to learn and excel with him.
When he wasn’t around?
No fucks given.
Find a mentor, and cherish them.
Alternatively, find someone ON THE SAME LEVEL AS YOU (very important), and be accountable with them.
If they are not on the same level, don’t even bother. They aren’t worth it.
It’s easy to fall into ruts. It’s easy to get complacent. Remember that comfort is mediocrity in disguise.
Don’t get too comfortable or you’ll look back a year from now and wonder why you’re the exact same person. Ideally you should hardly recognize yourself.
I don’t recognize myself as the man I was when I turned 24 versus when I turned this year.
Do you recognize YOURSELF?
