Micro Niche Site, Week 2: I’m #1 On Google!

Welcome to the second week in this installment of building a micro niche website. If you didn’t read the first post…

January 5th, Week 1: Building A Micro Niche Site: See It In Action

Again, the goals by February 1st are:

[su_box title=”Site Goals & Costs – Week 1″]

General Goals

Post Count: 7/50*
Email Subscribers: 0/10
Posts on #1 Google page: 0/1
Total Traffic: 0

Cost So Far

  • $10 – for domain and one year registration
  • $5 – hosting the website; I already have hosting for This is Trouble and other websites I run, but it needs to be accounted for.
  • $5 – I have an AWeber account that I pay $20 a month for, but I use that across all websites as well.
  • Total: $20

Immediate To-Do List

  • Build the email list and get opt-in forms going.
  • Continue writing posts, I’m aiming to get to 20 by the end of this week.
  • Ensure Google Analytics and A/B testing for opt-in forms are working properly.

*Note – last week my original post said I had 9 posts out of 50 done, in reality it was 7. Whoops!

Let’s start first with the immediate to-dos.

The email list has been built and it has an opt-in form fully functional. I did not get to 20 posts as of writing this (Monday night), but I am up to 13 from 7. And finally, Google Analytics is fully working and all my tracking code is in place. So if we’re being technical…the goal was 11, and I barely topped half of that. Not so good.

But…I did write a new book this weekend.

Yeah, an entire book, I’m not kidding. I had the outline and the first chapter done, but I just told myself it was time to buckle down and do it. Needless to say I didn’t really sleep much, and I think I’ve developed carpel tunnel.

But I digress.

Probably part of the reason I neglected the niche site in favor of writing the book was because…the niche is doing really well. No sales yet, but it’s gotta be close.

Site Stats

These stats are pulled from January 5th (the date of the first post), and run through today, January 11th. While these numbers look great on paper, I suspect something is off with the bounce rate.

The Bounce Rate is the percentage of single-page visits (i.e. visits in which the person left your site from the entrance page without interacting with the page). There’s just no way that’s possible. If you dig into the ‘Social Media Stats’ now though, you can see it’s not so good.

stats2 A one second session duration from StumbleUpon is worrisome, and the Facebook one isn’t much better. I don’t know how the Twitter one is so high.

Buying Ads

I’m going to give it some more time to settle out these stats – I started buying ad space on both StumbeUpon and Facebook on Saturday and was immediately getting traffic from both. So far I’ve spent about $13 on Facebook and $6 on StumbleUpon. I would say it’s worth it so far – just getting the backlinks from those big sites will certainly help the SEO score of my niche website. Would it be worth it to up the amount of ads?

I’ll give it a few more days of traffic acquisition before I make a final judgment. I also realize that some of the very long sessions are due to family/friends I’ve shared the link with checking it out.

Search Engine Rankings

Now…the good news.

One of my posts is in the #1 spot on Google!

Yes, you read that correctly.

After less than a week, it’s in the #1 spot. It’s not one of my “big” articles, but I’m happy regardless. In fact, you can see that a lot of my keywords are already touching the Google ranks. This doesn’t seem to be exact, but I’ve confirmed on at least four separate posts that they’re about halfway up the third page of Google. Here’s a glance at my keyword analysis, below.

*Average Position is where it is on Google’s ranks. Meaning that 11 in this case is the first post on the second page, and 35 is the fifth post on the third.

Pretty exciting stuff, isn’t it?

Stay tuned for another post next week about this. No update on either of the two guys who are also building niche sites with me, the lazy slackers…
